Start with the areas that need visibility
List the areas where footage would actually matter if something went wrong, then plan cameras around those areas.
- Entries and exits. Staff doors, visitor entries and emergency exits, with coverage clear enough to identify people.
- Loading docks. Vehicle movements, loading and unloading, and the handover points where goods change hands.
- Aisles and racking. Long sightlines need camera positions that avoid blind spots behind racking.
- High-value and controlled zones. Tool stores, cages, server or comms rooms and dispatch areas.
- External areas. Car parks, yards, gates and building perimeters, with lighting considered alongside cameras.
- Office and reception areas. Internal areas where incidents or disputes are most likely to need review.
Cameras need cabling, network and power planning
Each camera needs data cabling or a network pathway, power, mounting and a recording destination. Warehouse heights, racking layouts and long cable runs make this planning more important than in an office.
Because EDN delivers data cabling and electrical works alongside security, camera positions can be planned with the cabling, switching, storage and power that support them.
- Cable routes and distances
- Switch and PoE capacity
- Recorder location and storage
- Access equipment for high mounting
Think about how the system will be used after installation
A CCTV system is only useful if the business can actually operate it.
- Who reviews footage. Confirm who needs access, from where, and on what devices.
- Retention period. Storage capacity should match how long footage needs to be kept.
- Alerts and monitoring. Decide whether the system is reviewed after events or actively monitored.
- Maintenance. Cameras, storage and software need periodic checks to stay reliable.
